Keeping your gear well organized will help by distributing your weight load evenly and allow for fine adjustments.
Before you can adjust your backpack, you should pay attention first to how your backpack is loaded.
Weight Vs Accessibility
Ideally, you will want to place your Lighter items in the bottom compartment, Heaviest in the middle and Medium Weight items in the top. However, you will also need to factor in things like accessibility to items you might need during the day.
Divide your backpack in 3 compartments.
3) Top – Medium weight items. Items you may need to get at quickly.
- Rain Jacket
- Warm Layer
- First Aid
2) Middle – Heavy items you most likely will NOT need while hiking
- Water Bladder
- Stoves / Fuel
1) Bottom – Light items you will NOT need until you get to camp.
- Sleeping Bag
- Sleeping Pad
- Sleep Clothes
Once you find a spot for each piece of gear, remember where it lives. Being able to efficiently pack your setup will make getting out of camp much easier and make your pack feel better while hiking.
